Description
This Italian Sausage & Pepper Frittata Affogato is a cozy, bold skillet meal made with fluffy eggs, caramelized onions, sweet red peppers, and savory beef sausage, all finished under the broiler with rich marinara and melted mozzarella for a true Italian-inspired comfort dish.
Ingredients
Scale
- 12 large eggs
- 1/4 cup whole milk
- 1/4 cup chopped fresh basil (plus more for garnish)
- 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
- 1 medium red bell pepper, thinly sliced
- 1 small yellow onion, thinly sliced
- 1/2 lb beef Italian sausage, casings removed
- 2 cups marinara sauce
- 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
Instructions
- Preheat oven broiler to high and whisk eggs, milk, basil, salt, and pepper until just combined.
- Heat olive oil in a large oven-safe skillet over medium heat and sauté bell pepper and onion until soft and lightly caramelized.
- Add sausage, break it apart, and cook until browned and fully cooked.
- Pour egg mixture into the skillet and gently stir to distribute ingredients evenly.
- Cook until edges are set and center is slightly runny.
- Transfer skillet to broiler and cook until eggs are puffed and just set.
- Spoon marinara over the top, sprinkle with mozzarella, and broil until cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Rest briefly, garnish with basil, slice, and serve warm.
Notes
Use a thick marinara to avoid sogginess and grate mozzarella fresh for the best melt. This frittata is great for brunch, lunch, or make-ahead meals.
