Description

These Slice and Bake Heart Cookies are buttery, soft, and visually stunning perfect for Valentine’s Day, festive gatherings, or sharing love through baking. With their sweet vanilla flavor and heart-shaped center, they’re an irresistible treat that’s as fun to make as it is to gift.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¼ teaspoon almond extract (optional)
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • Red or pink natural food coloring

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, cream together softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  2. Add egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract, mixing until fully combined.
  3. Gradually mix in flour and salt until a soft dough forms. Do not overmix.
  4. Divide the dough, coloring one-third with red or pink food coloring.
  5. Roll out the colored dough and cut small heart shapes using a cookie cutter. Stack the hearts together to form a log, wrap in plastic, and chill for 30 minutes.
  6. Roll out the plain dough and wrap it around the heart-shaped log. Smooth the sides, wrap again, and chill for 1 hour or freeze for up to 2 months.
  7. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Slice the chilled dough into ¼-inch rounds and place on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  8. Bake for 10–12 minutes or until edges are lightly golden. Cool for 5 minutes, then transfer to a rack to cool completely.
  9. Enjoy as-is, or decorate with icing, white chocolate, or powdered sugar for an elegant finish.

Notes

Chill the dough well to prevent spreading. Use natural food coloring for vibrant, safe hues. Slice with a sharp knife for clean edges. For extra flair, dip half in melted white chocolate or dust with powdered sugar. Store in an airtight container for up to one week or freeze dough for two months.
